Legendary Origin
The name derives from the demon Mookasura (or Kaumasura), who terrorized sages until Goddess Parvati slew him in the form of Mookambika (“slayer of the dumb demon”). Adi Shankaracharya meditated here, drew a Sri Chakra with his toe, and installed the idol after the goddess followed him but stayed when he looked back during his journey to Kerala.
